East Iceland History & Heritage Map is richly illustrated and with text boxes on the front (roads and road numbers as well). Texts and beautiful photographs from the east on the back. Ari the Wise wrote of papar, Irish Christian hermits who had been in Iceland before the Norse settlement. A number of place names in the southeast apparently derived from the word papar. The east of Iceland may thus have been inhabited before the Norse settlement of about 870 AD. The rich folklore of the east includes tales of a gigantic serpent in the Lagarfljót river, as well as legends of witches’ graves, trolls and elves.
The map introduces the history and heritage of East Iceland from the settlement in the 9th century up to the 20th century. The map also introduce the inhabitants’ way of life, the legends and birdlife of the area, reindeer in the east, Icelandic medicinal herbs and tourism in East Iceland
Size: A1 (84 x 59 cm), folded in a pocket version (10,5 x 20 cm).
The map is also available as a poster (unfolded).
