In the middle of the night, 23rd January 1973 the eruption of Eldfell began. In this documentary the beginning of the eruption is shown and the various events which happened whilst the Volcano exploded. Before the eruption was over, approximately one third of the town Vestmannaeyjar had been obliterated. Potential damage was reduced by spraying seawater onto the advancing lava causing them to be slowed, stopped or diverted from the undamaged portion of the town. Second part of the film is about how the people of Vestmannaeyjar stood together, reconstructing the town and rebuilding houses.
