This book introduces some of the earliest and most famous of Icelandic manuscripts: Kings's Sagas, Sagas of Icelanders, the ancient laws, the great mythological and heroic lays of the Poetic Edda and the superb tales of Snorri's Edda. This introduction to Iceland's literary heritage is lavishly illustrated with colour and monochrome photograps which bring home to the reader the vigorous originality of the vellums themselves. The author, Dr Jónas Kristjánsson, is an internationally recognised authority on early Icelandic literature and until recently the Director of the Árni Magnússon Institute in Reykjavík, the centre for the preservation and study of Old Icelandic manuscripts. He has published a large number of books and articles on the subject if Icelandic language and literature, and his contribution to the field has been recognised by learned academies and istitutions throughout the world.
