When prince Sigurður's and princess Líneik's mother dies the king, their father, remarries. They get not only a stepmother, but also a stepsister, Laufey. The new queen, who is wicked and ruthless, quickly gets rid of the king, and the prince and princess go into hiding. Then a handsome young prince appears and asks for Líneik's hand in marriage, but is promised Laufey instead and told she is Líneik.
