The word rune is derived from an old root meaning concealment or secrecy. In German it is closely related to the word "raumen" which mean "to whisper". The word rune has always been related to something which is mysterious. There are two types of runic alphabets. Then a new runic alphabet was adopted which comprises 16 runes and is mostly derived from the older runic alphabet. There are different views of the roles the runes played. During the 12. century A.D complete books were written with runes and runes were also carved on runic cylinder for the purpose of transporting messages between people.
