Skaftafell – Bedrock geology This is a map of Skaftafell´s bedrock geology in a scale of 1:25.000. The map is detailed and represents many years of work in this beautiful national park in SE-Iceland. The bedrock in Skaftafell was formed during the last 5 million years. At about 2.7 million years ago the present ice age began to change the landscape of what is now Skaftafell. In the beginning the land was relatively flat. When the ice age began valleys started to form that have deepened to the present level of over 2000 m depth. The bedrock is partly made up of lavas that formed under ice free conditions. Also, a large proportion is made of hyaloclastite or „moberg“ rocks, varied rocks that erupted when glacier ice covered the area.
